Pelicula – The Ecuadorian movie “Instantánea” (Snapshot) was shown at the CCE Fri. morning.

Charla y instalación (Talk and installation) – Mexican artist Yasmín Guerrero gave a talk in the Sala Comunitaria at the Museo Pumapungo and installed an audial piece in the ek (sic) Parque Arqueológico at 18:00.

CIDAP – The show “Artesanía y arte en armonía: Kimberley Wood” (Crafts and Art in Harmony: Kimberley Wood) is at CIDAP.

Interview – A Bienal participant, Hugo Crosthwite, painted a mural at the Casa de las Posadas in 3 days.  This improvised mural was presented la noche del miércoles. The mural reflects the violence and prejudices that Tijuana lives with.  The mural shows a mestiza woman with the scales of justice in one hand, and the head of Trump in the other and flanked by 3 skeleton figures on cell phones.  The artist also took inspiration from images of Judith and Holofernes.  The artist said that he has always thought that the biggest fear a racist white man has, is to be beheaded by a mestiza woman.  (Which head?)

Concerts – The “José María Rodríguez” Conservatory will celebrate its 75th anniversary with 2 performances.  On 14/2 at 18:30 there will be a solemn session in the Salón de la Ciudad and a recital by students of string, wind and percussion instruments.  On 23/2 at 20:00 there will be a gala concert in the teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz with Childrens’ Chorus, the Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a dance troupe.

CCE – The CCE has an agreement with the School of Architecture at the U. of Cuenca for future work on the CCE building.  (That’s the building with the pedestrian bridge over Pres. Córdova at Pres. Borrero.)  Students who are fulfilling their community service requirements analyzed the building and recommended structural improvements.

Periodistas – 3 journalists were recognized with the Distinción al Mérito Profesional (Distinction for Professional Merit) by the Unión Nacional de Periodistas.

Today’s political cartoon – Trump is standing in front of the “Muro” (wall) which is proportioned like a flag.  Where the stars used to be are bricks, and where the stripes used to be are rows of coiled barbed wire.  At his feet are the discarded stars and stripes.

Otras cosas – 

Titular – Tranvía: la espera sigue (Tranvía: the waiting goes on) – The 1,700 page response from CCRC is being reviewed by the auditor and it will take 6 or 7 days to make a recommendation regarding to terminate the contract or not.  The last word is the Mayor’s.  (And he’s been acting like he’s already decided to dump the CCRC.)

Protecting bananas – The EU approved rules of protection for EU banana producers ahead of the increase of imports from Ecuador.  The European banana industry, located in ultra peripheral regions of the EU (the Canary Isalnds), employs 37,000 people.

Vacations – Kids are out of school in the Sierra and Amazon until 12/2.

Flu shots – The Ministerio de Salud Publico (Ministry of Public Health) is giving flu shots and to date, has vaccinated 98% of the vulnerable groups – children under 5, pregnant women, the elderly, people with catastrophic diseases and health workers. (I guess I’m relying on herd immunity.)

Forests – The Environmental Ministry reported that the German Development Bank is granting 5.5 million Euros to implement the National Forest Monitoring System of Ecuador. The goal is to boost public policy for reducing deforestation.

Business page –

“Chaullapark” – (This one is for you foodies – let’s hope it’s a success.) Chuallapark is a business plan for an outside food court.  The entrepreneurs will set up 11 trailers which will offer a variety of food – Ecuadorian, Venezuelan, Peruvian. Mexican and more.  These won’t be food trucks (roach coaches, taco trucks) since they will be permanent at the site.

Your sliver of life article today is about coffee.  MAGAP (Ministerio de Agricultura Ganadería Aquacultura y Pesca – Ministry of Agriculture Livestock Aquaculture and Fisheries) gave 45,000 coffee plants to 18 small and medium coffee producers in Cañar canton.  These growers had previously received kits that included pumps for irrigation and application of fungicides, hoses, tools and a water tank.  Each kit is for 40,000 plants on 10-12 hectars.

Colombia – Congressman Odín Sánchez Montes de Oca was freed by ELN.  This was a prerequisite to the peace talks which start 7/2 in Quito.  Sanchéz had been held for 10 months.
