The hotel will be the city’s largest and will easily surpass Hotel Oro Verde, on Av. Ordoñez Lasso, in meeting capacity. According to Juan Fernando Cordero, manager for hotel partnership Inmobiliaria Piedra Huasi, the Sheraton will be able to handle meetings and conferences for groups of up to 2,000 using facilities at the adjacent Mall del Rio. Hotel Oro Verde has a maximum capacity of 500.

“We will be able to offer facilities and services unmatched not only in the southern sierra, but in the country in general,” Cordero said.

The Ortiz family of Cuenca, partners in the Sheraton with an investor from Guayaquil, own Mall del Rio and the Corral stores in Cuenca.

Cordero did not provide an exact opening date for the hotel but said construction would be completed in December with an opening to following within about two weeks.

He added that construction delays have forced the hotel to cancel Christmas parties this year.
