Event date: Apr. Sunday 23

Inclusive and Transforming Christian Worship This Sunday at ICC

Why do you believe what you believe?

Which of these statements describes your basis for having faith?

“I will believe it when I see it” or “I will see it when I believe it.”

Come join us this Sunday at the International Christian Community (ICC) as we reflect upon these questions through prayer, song and the written and spoken word of God. Pastor Kennemer will share a message with us from John 11: 24-29 on the theme “The Power of Believing”. Our services are open to Christians from all persuasions. After our services we have a joyous time of fellowship with some wonderful snacks, so plan now to come and enjoy “God With Us”.

Worship Service: Sunday, April 23rd at 11 AM

Location: Nicanor Aguilar and Solano, Cuenca (just north & east of Mt. Sinai Hospital)

Relax and enjoy a local, place-based take on honoring Earth Day, accompanied by refreshments and Stu’s breathtaking photos of this untrammeled wilderness.

Tickets available at the Windhorse Café (closed M-W, opens Thur AM), or at Fundación Cordillera Tropical’s Huayna Capac office. Space is limited – reserve now! Expression of The Day: “Que hecho leña”

Discover a new phrase each week to use in your daily life! These are common phrases and sayings that Spanish speakers use on a daily basis. Just because you know the words doesn’t mean you know what they’re saying!

“Que hecho leña”

“What made firewood” is what Google returns when you plug it into its translator. Althought “hecho” means “done” and “leña” means wood in English, when used as part of the phrase “que hecho leña”, it means “how horrible” or “how unfortunate” that a situation, moment or bad thing happened to you. It is commonly used to describe a person’s bad attitude or your current mood.

You can use this expression with the verb ser/estar.

Example 1: In a complicated situation

You are walking down the street and suddenly a person who doesn’t like you pushes you over. A friend of yours is behind you and helps you to get up and he/she tells you : “Que hecho leña como se portó contigo” “How horrible what she/he did to you”.

Example 2: To describe a mood

You are walking down the street and you get robbed. You feel down and go visit your friend to tell her/him about that, when you are talking you say “Me siento hecho leña” “I feel down”.

Translator and Assistant

If you are going to need surgery and are worried about language and cultural differences; and need the assistance of someone to be your “wingman”, then you need a bilingual advocate to represent you. That is why I recommend having Alexandra Maldonado as your bilingual personal assistant. Recently I underwent two simultaneous hospital procedures (a colonoscopy with an endoscopy) and Alexandra arranged round trip transportation; checked me in at the reception desk and also into the operating room; translated exactly what the nurses and doctor explained; safeguarded my clothes and personal effects when I changed into the hospital’s skimpy and revealing gown; translated the doctor’s findings after both procedures were done; and helped me to correctly and accurately pay the cashier before being discharged (which was very reassuring, since I was still under some of the anesthesia). Back at home she also prepared and cooked a delicious lunch before my much needed long nap. In addition to offering translation services, house cleaning and house sitting, running errands, pet walking and pet sitting, you could say Alexandra Maldonado also offers “Gringo sitting”!

Maria Isabel Arpi Facilitator/Cultural Guide

Maria assisted me for about a year. She was amazing. She helped with everything, from negotiating a rental, to utilities, argued with Puntonet for me to save me $100, showed me the small towns and explained how best to live the culture. She helped me on a visa required trip to Peru. She showed me best places to shop and what to watch out for. She advised the crime areas and how to avoid problems. I learned 10 years of info that was invaluable to me. I came to rely on her for many things.

She is loyal, trustworthy and honest. She has lived in Cuenca all her life. She knows every nook and cranny. She graduated from the University for Business Administration. She has attended a number of English schools including the Abe Lincoln School of Language.

Her fee is $4 and hour or $30 for the day (about 8 hours). I used her for so long because I found she actually saved me money.

She can be reached at: +593 98 950 0823 (whatsapp is best.) She can also be messaged on Facebook at “Ma Isabel”
